File Extension Library. A file extension is three or four characters at the end of a filename, such as.DOCX,.PDF or.TXT. File extensions tell you the file type, and which programs can open it. These extensions are used in Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux Operating Systems. A file with the DMG file extension is an Apple Disk Image file, or sometimes called a Mac. PeaZip and 7-Zip, both free, support opening DMG files in Windows.
Mac users see DMG files on a regular basis. These archived files are commonly used to hold OS X applications and other information. Opening DMG files on a Mac system is easy: Simply double-click the archive to mount it and reveal its contents. For Windows users, opening such files isn't quite as easy. Windows cannot open DMG files by default, because no important files for Windows users are contained in them. From time to time, however, a Windows user may have reason to open such a file. If that's the case for you, it is possible to do so.
Install 7-Zip, a free, open-source program for Windows capable of opening almost any archived file, including DMG files.
Open the DMG file with 7-Zip. Open 7-Zip, then click “File,” followed by “Open.” Browse to your DMG file to open it. You can now see the files contained in the archive.
Extract the files from the DMG file if you desire. Click the “Extract” button, then specify where to put the extracted files.
